Meeting Moments

The East Beach Writers' Guild hosted Dr. William (Bill) Ruehlmann at their October meeting.

Tucked in amongst the long list of Bill's life accomplishments is that of current Book Reviewer for the Virginian-Pilot. In front of an audience of about 15 Guild members, East Beach residents and invited guests, he offered inspiration and advice to writers.

In short, he told us, "Every story/chapter/scene/sentence has a beginning, middle and end."  In order to illustrate that point he regaled us with tales from his journalism days and shared some poignant stories from his days as a reviewer. A story from his cub reporter days when he'd been assigned to go out into the streets and "find Christmas" (when it turned out Christmas found him!) had everyone in tears. And laughter abounded when he told us about the time he entered Zelda, his cat, into the local Cat Show in order to get an insider's perspective.

Guild member Mike Owens summed the presentation up best: "You can't prepare that talk-you have to live it!"

At the conclusion of his talk, the Guild presented Bill with a copy of By the Bay: East Beach Stories with a promise to get him the second anthology when it is available.
