The Proposal

Today we have an excerpt from "The Proposal" by Gina Buzby, Jayne Ormerod and Jenny Sparks.

But first let's read their blurb.

A unique proposal goes forward despite a sad history, an old boyfriend, and an artistically-challenged fiancée

Wow!  Don't you want more with that?

Well here's a bit more,  check out an excerpt from their story.

Lizzy Warren had more paint on her fingers than on the canvas, and class hadn’t even started yet. She wiped her hands off on the black artist’s apron that displayed a collection of monthly paint stains.  Setting up for the evening’s paint night always proved to be a bit messy.  Preparing twelve foam plate palettes with eight colors each and then finding room on the tables for these, plus table easels, brushes, water cups, etc.  Somebody, somewhere at some time was going to find a small, stray blob of paint.

And, usually it’s me, thought Lizzy.

Lizzy was a professional artist and gallery employee who also taught a paint night at the local sandwich shop once a month.  Paint nights were the trend right now.  One of the top five fastest growing franchises in the U.S. was a woman-owned paint-night company called Art with a Twist.  It replaced the generic happy hour with a purpose-filled evening, in addition to the drinking.  And it was satisfying in that it got everyone away from their cell phones and reconnected with a fun, childhood pastime.

Her set-up routine was interrupted when a man at the counter spoke to her. “Hi, my name is Daniel. What’s this you’re setting up?” he asked.

Ooh, he’s cute, Lizzie thought.

“Hi, Daniel. I’m Lizzy, the instructor for tonight’s Van Gogh and Vino social paint night. Are you joining us?”

“No, but thanks. So, a bunch of people get together to paint a canvas and drink wine?”

“That’s pretty much it, yes. It’s a new nation-wide craze. Paint and drink.”

“What if you can’t paint?” he asked as he gathered his sandwich and chips from the counter.

“It’s fun art, not fine art!  That’s one of the many mottos of paint night. You’re supposed to just come, relax with a glass of wine and your friends in order to break away from work, the cell phone, the routine.  And, have a great time.”
