The next morning, a strange noise startled Sarah from her sleep. What was that? she
wondered. She glanced at the clock. Three o’clock in the morning. Good Grief!!
Annoyed, Sarah tried to go back to sleep. Houses were still being built close all around
her house, and it seemed the noises never ceased. She had grown accustomed to the
usual suspects the roar of commercial and military airplanes overhead, the rumble of
garbage trucks and lumber delivery trucks, the yapping of neighbors’ dogs—but this
morning, really in the dead of night, the sound was different. Loud enough to awaken her,
but then silence. Sarah listened intently, but all she heard was the crashing of the waves
on the beach below her house.
